Voltage Optimization

Ameren continues to deploy next-generation automation capabilities to better serve its customers. Smart grid and voltage optimization are examples of enhancements that drive energy efficiency and reliability throughout the Ameren Illinois territory.

If you are a three phase power customer, it is important to protect your facility's sensitive electric equipment from voltage changes. Newer equipment may be equipped with the protection necessary to respond to single phasing and voltage fluctuations. Ameren Illinois recommends that three phase customers contact an electrical contractor to review equipment.

 

Voltage Optimization is the use of automation on distribution voltage control devices (switched capacitor banks, voltage metering, voltage regulators) to reduce the reactive power (VAR) flows on a circuit, and lower the voltage within regulatory limits to improve end-use customer energy consumption and reduce utility distribution system losses.

Ameren Illinois has always followed the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and been regulated by the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). To help reduce energy waste and help our customers be more energy efficient, we will use automation to operate voltage at optimal levels. This means that voltage levels will fluctuate throughout the day based upon loading on the circuit. Voltage levels will stay within the allowed range, but these fluctuations may impact some sensitive equipment owned by our three-phase customers.
Nationally, voltage range recommendation is established by ANSI, while the Illinois Administrative Code outlines voltage range requirements for the state of Illinois.
This will be a seamless transition for our single-phase customers. This process does not impact customers served from subtransmission 34kv, 69kv or 138kv. This is mainly a notice to our three-phase business customers. Impacts may vary based on your owned equipment. We recommend three phase customers with sensitive equipment work with an electrical contractor to ensure their equipment will operate throughout the allowable voltage range.
